Guitar, Ukulele, and Rhythm Kids Class Resources

Fall 2020: Prelude Online - 12 weeks

Featuring the Music Together® Bongos Collection, Canta y Baila Conmigo® La Pájarita Pinta, Rhythm Kids Kangaroo Collection, Family Ukulele Class, and Guitar for Beginners

For our Fall Session this year, we are offering several additional classes for the whole family to make music. Access to all of these classes is included in your Fall tuition.

Please find links to suggested instruments and accessories for the following classes:

Ukulele Class:

Each person participating in the Family Ukulele class should have access to a ukulele to play. Ukuleles come in several standard sizes: Soprano, Concert, Tenor, and Baritone. For the class we recommend either a Soprano or a Concert ukulele. The Tenor and Baritone ukuleles are often tuned differently, so the chords that we learn in class will not necessarily work on those instruments. Everyone taking class could use a Soprano (the smallest ukulele), although some adults might find the finger position a little cramped. Here are a few Amazon links for ukuleles:

In addition to a ukulele, you will need a tuner. Each person taking the class does not need their own tuner; one tuner per household will be sufficient. Tuners cost $20-50 each on Amazon, so this can get a little pricy if you want to get one for each player. Luckily, Amazon has many kits that include a case, strap, and tuner. Some of these kits are actually cheaper than buying a ukulele by itself. Here are some kit options:

Ukuleles can also be purchased locally at Guitar Center, Rockin’ Robbin, or Fuller’s Guitars. Remember you need a Soprano or Concert sized ukulele.

Rhythm Kids:

If you plan on taking Rhythm Kids this Summer, make sure that you include the Rhythm Kids materials in your registration. Everyone taking the Rhythm Kids class should have something to drum with. A Djembe is what we recommend for the class. There are many different sizes and prices for Djembe drums. We recommend a djembe at least 12” tall at a minimum. 12”-16” tall is a great option for children. For adults, a drum at least 20” tall is recommended. Here are a few Amazon links:

12.5” tall (7-inch head)

16” tall (7.5-8.5” head)

20” tall (9.5” head)

Beginning Guitar for Adults:

For our guitar class, you will need a guitar, a capo, a tuner, and a pick. There are MANY options in terms of guitars. We recommend an acoustic, steel-string guitar. Many adults find a full-sized dreadnought acoustic guitar very difficult to play because the width of the neck of the guitar makes some chords a little difficult. There are some slightly smaller guitars that are much easier to play (even for grownups!)
